About Us

vision mission

We are a non-profit organisation aimed at reducing the population of stray cats and dogs through sterilisation and advocating a no-kill practice. Our organisation became official in 2013 with our registration to The Registrar of Societis Malaysia. We strongly believe that TNR (Trap-Neuter-Releasing/Rehoming) is an effective method that can replace the conventional and cruel practice of euthanasia (killing) for controlling the population of stray cats and dogs. We also encourage the practice of pet adoption as opposed to purchasing, as it not only helps us in finding a home for our rescued strays, but it also prevents the suffering of animals in puppy mills.

Our Vision

1. To make Miri city a stray-free city by 2023.

2. To have reinforced animal protection and welfare laws in Miri.

Our Mission

1. To reduce the number of strays and the spread of diseases in Miri  through the Trap, Neuter and Release Program (TNR), zone by zone.

2. To provide shelter through foster care, and adoption opportunities for younger or injured strays in Miri who are not suitable for the TNR Program.

3. To educate the public about their responsibilities as pet owners and to cultivate loving attitudes toward animals.

4. To bring together the efforts of animal lovers to improve animal welfare and to reduce animal abuse in Miri.

Our Story

Zero Strays Miri's story started with a puppy named QQ, who was found in Strawberry Hill by Xiao Ling. At the time, QQ was suffering from a lot of pain because his genital area had been injured, possibly by his siblings who mistook it for their mother's nipples. The injury was so bad that QQ was unable to pee, and the untreated wound gave him so much pain that he was constantly crying and whining.

Xiao Ling, being an animal lover and a kind hearted woman, felt terribly sad to see QQ in such a horrid condition. She immediately took him to the vet to seek treatment. It turned out that the injury was indeed very severe, and QQ had to be medically aided to urinate.  This situation would continue until QQ was old enough for a penis-implant surgery.

Even though the surgery, and caring for QQ, was very costly, Xiao Ling did not give up. She adopted QQ as her pet, and gave him the best care that she could. She gathered a few friends and together, they came up with an idea to try and raise funds for his surgery through social media websites and the local paper. Many kind hearted people started sending in donations when they heard QQ's story.

To their surprise, the amount of donations collected exceeded what they asked for, and  right away, the group had a thought - to save more homeless animals. They wanted zero strays in Miri. With that goal in mind, they set out to form a non-profit organization for helping the strays and called it Zero Strays Miri. On the 18th of January, 2013, Zero Strays Miri became official.
